When looking at the top paying jobs in the US, it becomes strikingly obvious that almost anyone who wants to earn a lot of money needs to invest in at least a four year college education, and typically more to get the really big bucks.  But, while doctors and lawyers rank high on the list of the best paying jobs in the country, it may be surprising to see what other kinds of jobs pay well.

First, the not-so-big news:  of the top ten highest paying jobs listed with the US Department of Labor, seven are classified as some type of doctor (surgeon being #1 on the list, of course).  On average, the top ten salary makers can pull in over $65 an hour!  But, not only are people paying for the services provided, but also the training and education the individual has received over the years.

However, as Ben Murray states in his article “The Next 10 Highest Paying Jobs in the US”, many top paying positions are not just doctors and lawyers.  With businesses becoming more dependent on the speed of computers to conduct business, well-trained computer and information system managers are required (and well-paid, to the tune of over $80,000/year) to keep the computer systems up, running and reliable.

The Department of Labor also lists air traffic controllers in the top 20 of highest salary earners.  The FAA does usually look for a college degree, but other work experience can be considered and any candidate for this job must go through a special training program in order to be certified and eligible to work in this highly technical and stressful job.

For those students who always wondered how science and math could ever pay off in the future, they may want to think again.   Other entries into the top twenty moneymaking careers, according the Department of Labor, include physicists, nuclear scientists and engineers.  So, before tossing that trigonometry or chemistry book out the window, think about how learning these subjects can pay off in the long run.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rule that the highest salaries in the country are earned by those who are college and graduate school educated.  But, even those who “stumbled” onto their fame and fortune (be it actor, inventor, etc), have all been trained specially in their field.  In other words, if there is money to be had and earned, it is for those who are willing to invest the time and energy getting the knowledge they need to provide the best quality service and/or product that they can.
