Can a 15-year old student legally work?  Absolutely!  However, where they are eligible to work is not so certain.  There are federal laws that govern where and what for someone younger than 16 can be employed.  This makes hiring people under the age of 16 a bit of a gamble.  Sometimes, employers simply don’t want to deal with the hassles of the scheduling conflicts that can arise from the federal rules.

According to federal Department of Labor, during the school year, a 15-year old is eligible to work any time after 7 am and before 7 pm.  During the summer months, the “curfew” for a 15-year old is 9 pm.  It is also important to note that these are only federal rules, and state laws can be even more stringent than the federal law.  For example, some states require all employers to fill out a form in order to document the number of hours each worker under the age of 15 performs.

Although there are special considerations to make regarding 15-year old potential employees, many businesses are legally able to hire them.  Some popular workplaces for 15-year olds include:  grocery stores, newspaper carrier services, movie theaters, sports and amusement parks, some retail stores and restaurants.  The jobs available out there for young people aren’t always the most exciting to this age group, but many pay a decent wage and offer the hours required.

If a young person is looking for a job other than the ones listed above, she or he may want to consider starting their own business?  But, can someone this young do that?  Of course!  Teenagers have been doing this for years, with traditional services such as babysitting and home/yard care services.  However, with the dawn of new technology, teenagers are starting to get more creative.  Teenagers are often far more confident on the computer and can offer services such as desktop publishing, transcription, research and web design.  Teens love to be creative, and why not have a job that allows them to tap into this energy and desire?

So, be it practical and traditional or high-tech and creative, there are plenty of job opportunities for 15-year olds.  It may be challenging for them to find the right fit when it comes to employment; however, with a little ingenuity and a lot of patience, there is a job out there for almost anyone.
